In most cases, after chemical cleaning metal surfaces need to be protected until brought into use, or receive temporary protection before further assembly or processing.

They may need to receive some form of protection from corrosion during shipping or storage.

In many cases the overall protection is provided by a combination of individual materials, such as a surface coating in combination with an outer wrapping.
